Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance: Because: A dance for Gymnasiums

  • The gymnasium of the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance’s latest work, Because, is an expansive, intimate, and existential exhibition of athleticism, humanity, and nostalgia. Because, like gyms, we are the same and different at every age; Because memory is just as much an act of fantasy as a recollection of fact; Because all that is certain is the end, there will be a party in a gym. And we hope it’s one to remember.

This special Tuesday, February 18 performance of Because at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School Reception features musical performances by ARGS students, a talk-back between artists and audience, and a reception following the performance.

Tickets are $25 or PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN at the door or in advance by clicking here.

Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance: Cluck: Guest artist residency w/ Sarah McCullough

  • The Southern Theater (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Cluck is a poignant and striking solo exploring the power of denial. At its heart, the piece is a tenderly absurd love duet between the soloist and a highly improbable partner—a raw chicken. Through this unconventional pairing, Cluck delves into themes of longing, delusion, and the human capacity to cling to hope, no matter how improbable. Romantic, unsettling, and unexpectedly moving, Cluck balances elegance and discomfort, capturing the audience in its raw emotional core. A short yet impactful piece, Cluck is both graceful and grotesque, inviting viewers to reflect on the unexpected beauty within the absurd.

Sarah McCullough in the 2025 revival of Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance’s 205 work Cluck. Photos by Nick Lents.

Shannon Hummel is honored to revive this unique work with Minneapolis dance artist Sarah McCullough in 2025. Cluck was originally performed by Nadia Tykulsker and premiered at the BAM/Brooklyn Academy of Music's Fisher Theater in 2015. Longtime Cora guest collaborator Cynthia Thompson later commissioned Cluck, presenting the re-imagined version at the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts at James Madison University in 2016, performing it widely for 6 years. Inspired by Thompson, McCullough now graciously makes this bird fly into its second decade of performance. Performances of Cluck, master classes and open rehearsal schedule coming soon!

Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance shares a full-length preview of the professional company’s latest work-in-progress, Because.

Gymnasiums are emotional spaces of triumph, defeat, intensity, and mundanity. They are both distinctly different, recognizably the same, and always timeless. Created specifically for gymnasiums, Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance’s latest work-in-development, Because, is an expansive, intimate, and existential exhibition of athleticism and humanity. Because, like gyms, we are always the same and different at every age; Because memory is just as much an act of imagination and fantasy as a recollection of fact; Because all that is certain is the end… there will be a party in a gym. And we believe it’ll be beautiful.

Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance presents "Because" (Clifton Forge Preview)

tickets

Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance shares its first full-length preview of the professional company’s latest work-in-progress, Because. Created specifically for the CF Armory’s gymnasium, each performance will be followed by a talk-back with the artists.

Because we are the same and different at 15, at 35, at 55; Because we are inexplicably moved by small moments we carry in our hearts or leave behind; Because the hopes of youth push us toward inventing ourselves and losing our dreams, Because of this… there will be a party… in a gym. And we hope it’s gonna be fun.

Choreography by: Shannon Hummel in collaboration with the dancers

Dancers: Nikki Assanti, Ross Honaker, Ammara Shafqat, Keon Washington

Original Score by: Hans Bilger

Production Manager: Carter Adcock

Suggested Admission: $25 or pay-what-you-can.

Tickets will be available by December 1, 2023.
