Gymnasiums are emotional spaces of triumph, defeat, intensity, and mundanity. They are each distinctly different, recognizably the same, and always timeless. Created specifically for gymnasiums, Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance’s latest work-in-development, Because, is an expansive, intimate, and existential exhibition of athleticism and humanity.
Because, like gyms, we are always and never the same as we once were,
Because the hopes of youth push us to find and lose our way,
Because the smallest moments create the deepest memories,
Because the only thing certain is uncertainty,
Because when it’s all over and we are together again, we hope it’s as beautiful as our very first dance and that you are there with us.
Choreography by Shannon Hummel in collaboration with dancers Nikki Assanti, Ross Honaker, Ammara Shafqat, Keon Washington (with additional contributions by Katie Dean)
