Shannon Hummel’s beautifully brutal work, down here, was originally performed in 2015 by Calia Marshall and Katie Dean at BAM/Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Fisher Theatre. Called “a rare gem” by The New York Times, this acclaimed duet of intense attachments - to what we must have and what we will not stand for - charts a cycle of physical, emotional, and environmental eruptions. Fueled by the compromises we make to be true to ourselves while endeavoring to connecting, down here makes visible, with the help of hundreds of tiny silver dolls, the little scars we leave on one another in our pursuit of control. At its core, it is simply about relationships; to each other, to outside forces we cannot control and to our own power to knowingly and unknowingly harm and heal.
In 2025 - ten years after its premiere - SH/CD presents a compelling revival adapted for and performed by current Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance company members Ross Honaker and Ammara Shafqat. The work’s first full-length preview performance will take place in the Pittman Studio Theatre on the campus of Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS) in Petersburg, VA, marking the first public performance held in the space since the studio’s addition of theatrical lighting, sound system and flexible seating.
